The degree of a leak may make it more difficult to spot, but you can be on the lookout for various signs of a leak in your home. If you notice water bills creeping higher each month, mold growing where it shouldn’t, or damp walls or cabinets, you might have one or more water leaks. These can cause severe water damage over time or produce an environment for mold to thrive. For individuals with allergies or sensitivity to mold, this can be extremely dangerous. Leak detection in water lines can be difficult as the water may travel along the outside of the pipe from the leak location before dripping down. Our plumbing technicians know exactly how to find the source of the leak and replace the pipe if needed.

Sewer leaks can cause gases from the waste-line to back up into the home or cause slow drainage. While some handy homeowners might be able to repair leaky water lines, sewer lines and gas lines must be repaired by a professional plumber. Gas leaks can be especially dangerous due to both an explosive hazard from the gas and from carbon monoxide poisoning to those inside. If you notice a rotten egg smell, it could indicate a sewer leak, but it could also be a dangerous leak in your gas line. Get out of the house immediately, and call C&W Plumbing’s emergency service anytime of the day or night to come and repair the leak immediately.

August 31st, 2011 Comments off

Lewisville TX leak detectionWhen it comes to the plumbing system in your home, the possibility of a leak is always there. Even with proper preventative maintenance, sometimes leaks just happen. Before you go about fixing a plumbing leak, however, it is extremely important to diagnose what type it is, so you know exactly what you’re dealing with. By effectively diagnosing the type of leak, you can be better prepared as to how to alleviate the issue. Our Lewisville TX plumbing technicians at C&W Plumbing can assist you in detecting, diagnosing, and repairing these leaks in a timely and efficient manner.

If you notice you have an unusually high monthly water bill, a water leak may be your issue. A water line leak is a serious issue, and can be caused by something as simple as a running toilet or something far more complicated, such as a slab leak. Slab leaks can cause costly damage to your home’s foundation, and are not something to be taken lightly. One of our reliable plumbing professionals can accurately assess the situation in your home, devising the best plan of action to move forward with, and execute it effectively.

Far more serious are sewer leaks and gas leaks. The former is mostly characterized by slow draining in your home, a gurgling sound when flushing the toilet, or a rotten egg smell wafting through your residence. These leaks are usually caused by an obstruction in your drain line, be it a tree root or anything else material in nature. A video camera inspection can determine the cause of the obstruction.

Gas leaks are the most serious of all the types of leaks in your plumbing system. Gas leaks are dangerous in that they are silent in nature, but vastly increase the chances of extreme fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Gas leaks are often fatal, so if you suspect you have one in your home, it is best to evacuate and wait for a technician to ensure your home is safe for you and your family.

How Fun in the Sun Can Affect Your Plumbing

June 2nd, 2011 Comments off

When summertime hits and Lewisville residents are ready to get outdoors and have a good time, the last thing on their mind is their plumbing system. However, it’s important to note that the pleasantries of heat and sunshine that are so compatible with fun in the sun can also cause destruction and devastation to plumbing fixtures. Taking a few precautions can help you avoid costly repairs from your local Lewisville plumbing company.

When you spend a lot of time outdoors, your clothes are bound to get dirty, especially children who play in the dirt or on playgrounds with dust and dirt and mud. This can lead to excess material in your washing machine hose, including additional lint and large amounts of dirt clogging the hose. By moving the washing machine away from the wall a few inches, you can remove kinks that cause additional blockage, which can lead to bulging, cracks and leaks. Make sure to clean out your machine to keep your washer running.

During a cookout, it is best to have garbage cans for leftovers so you can be more careful what you put down the garbage disposal. Residential garbage disposers are not typically equipped for hefty loads such as cornhusks or other fibrous and stringy foods. You may also want to avoid throwing a great deal of fat that can lead to large clogs in the pipes down your drain. A number of “just-add-water” foods, such as stuffing or mashed potatoes, will also create instant clogs.

Something else to watch for so you don’t end up with a disaster during your party is sewer drain backup. Due to excess rainwater that can seep through cracks in the sewer line, as well as new growth of tree roots that can invade your sewer system at any time, spring and summer are the most common times for a sewer problem. Since you don’t want the mess, smell, or hassle – especially during the neighborhood barbecue – have your Lewisville plumbing technicians inspect your sewer lines prior to risking a backup.

Taking a few simple precautions when it comes to proper plumbing can help you pull off your summer fling without a hitch. And if you find any plumbing repairs that need to be addressed, call our local Lewisville plumbers for fast, efficient plumbing service.

Support World Plumbing Day

March 9th, 2011 Comments off

World Plumbing DayFriday is a big day for plumbers all over the world, as it officially marked the second annual World Plumbing Day. This day serves as one to educate residential and commercial property owners about the important role that plumbers and the plumbing industry have in not only health and safety but also protecting the global environment.

The World Plumbing Council established World Plumbing Day last year. This year’s World Plumbing Day theme is “Plumbing vital to global health.” According to Robert D. Burgon, chairman of the World Plumbing Council, the day was founded because too many individuals tend to take for granted the importance of good plumbing and even better plumbers in everyday situations.

Winterizing Your Pipes

December 23rd, 2010 Comments off

Frozen PipesThe past few weeks, the Dallas-Fort Worth area has seen chilly temperatures, but let’s be honest: We haven’t seen frigid temperatures as of yet.

This all may change as we prepare for 2011. The months of January and February traditionally are the months where Texas feels more like upstate New York and less like Arizona. This is the perfect time for you to winterize your pipes and prepare for the freezing temperatures that potentially could do damage to your water pipes.

The first step in winterizing is to locate all water faucets and other places where water pipes can be bothered by inclement weather. Cover the faucets with something that can provide respectable insulation (a towel or heavy piece of clothing) against freezing weather.

From there, cover the wrapped faucet with a plastic bag and secure it with a rubber band. This will not only help to keep the faucet and water pipe dry but also keep the towel or clothing serving as insulation secure. It may seem a little off-base, but if done properly, it works.

Keep in mind that if your water lines get cold enough, they will break. A broken water line could cost you tons of money, and having a major bill is no way to start the new year. Contact our Lewisville TX plumbers for more information on winterizing your pipes. Call us today, or contact us online for details.

Gas Leak Detectors: What You Need To Know

October 22nd, 2010 Comments off

Gas Stove BurnersNatural gas leaks can be extremely dangerous and deadly. A simple flip of a light switch in some gas leak conditions may be all it takes to cause an explosion. Although odorless by nature, the natural gas that flows into your home contains odorant – similar to a rotten egg smell – added by the gas company to make it easy for you to detect gas leaks.

You can’t rely exclusively on your sense of smell, however, to detect gas leaks. The odor added to natural gas often fades. Additionally, this odor may be masked by other odors in your home. For these reasons, a gas leak detector is recommended.
